Design details

I just moved into a new house. Much of the furniture from my old apartment didn’t really fit in the new place, so I ended up getting quite a bit of new stuff. Actually, my wife and I mostly got new-to-us used vintage furniture, mostly very cheap. We have been scouring the local classifieds for months, finding deals when people are cleaning out the homes of their recently deceased parents, who had tons of high-quality furniture made with real wood. We like real wood. Our children wanted a more modern look for their rooms though, so we got them some new stuff. I have been doing lots of assembling of both new and used furniture the last several weeks, and the details are very interesting. Both kids ended up choosing the same wardrobe – one in black, one in white. Putting this thing together was a huge pain. The instructions were terrible, and the precision of the parts left quite a bit to be desired. For example, many of the pre-drilled holes did not quite match up, which made it quite difficult to insert screws. All of the screws and small pieces came in one plastic bag for you to sort yourself. None of the pieces were labeled. The quantities of the screws also didn’t match the content. In one case, we were short about 20 nails for attaching the back. Fortunately I had some spare ones which worked.

My daughter also got a new bed from Ikea, and the quality was much better. All the parts were labeled, the instructions were very clear, and the precision was much higher of the parts.

The crème de la crème was today though, when I assembled my new Fully Jarvis desk. I was impressed as soon as I opened the first box to find more boxes inside, clearly labeled with the contents. The screws were sorted into separate bags. All the holes were drilled with great precision, and the instructions were very easy to follow.

I guess this is one of those “you get what you pay for situations”. The furniture from imoebel24 was the cheapest, then Ikea, and then Fully.
